Think Tank Lab

In partnership with the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), MERICS is proud to announce the launch of the “Think Tank Lab”. You can find the official website of our joint project here.

With the world going through disruptive, complex, and uncertain times, the role of think tanks is perhaps more important than ever. However, think tanks are confronted with multiple external and internal challenges. These range from populism, decreasing trust in experts, and increased competition in an attention economy to new social media engagement and questions surrounding talent retention.

The Think Tank Lab – a three-year project funded by the Stiftung Mercator and the Robert Bosch Stiftung – aims to support German think tanks in navigating these challenges by fostering innovation and facilitating the exchange of best practice. It will do so by promoting activities under three pillars:

  1. Strengthening cooperation between think tanks by establishing a community of practice.
  2. Offering training opportunities to think tank employees in the context of a Think Tank School
  3. Collating best practice and innovations within think tanks in an accessible Think Tank Toolbox.

Many think tanks realize the need for a more structured approach to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). The Think Tank Lab Diversity group has published three guidelines which you can read here.

The three-year project is funded by Stiftung Mercator and Robert Bosch Stiftung.
