Kai von Carnap is an analyst in the MERICS research team for science, technology and innovation. His research focuses on the relation between the party state and information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the context of China’s digital development path. His primary focus lies in analyzing China's strategies pertaining to cyber sovereignty, internet governance, and its role in internet fragmentation. Additionally, he explores the development of internet and data regulations and standards.

Kai holds a double MA in Chinese-European Economics and Business Studies from the Berlin School of Economics and Law and the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics Chengdu, as well as a BA in Sinology and Economics from the Heidelberg University.
